The following days were marked by an unnatural silence. Even the Yggdrasil’s systems seemed to run more slowly, as if the ship itself were in some kind of trance. However, at night, the silence was broken by a voice: no one could say where it came from or to whom it belonged, but everyone heard it. It was a deep, distant, multi-voiced sound that repeated phrases in archaic Latin mixed with incomprehensible words. The crew’s dreams turned feverish; Ak and Kumi were also drawn into nightmares in which the ship drifted eternally in a sea of liquid darkness, guided only by whispers and distorted reflections.

Kumi decidió grabar la voz usando los micrófonos internos. Cuando reprodujeron la grabación, descubrieron que la voz, al acelerarse o ralentizarse, formaba patrones: secuencias numéricas, ecuaciones físicas y referencias a constelaciones lejanas, como si alguien o algo intentara comunicarse en un código universal. Luo, el ingeniero, propuso que la voz podía ser una señal de socorro de otra civilización, o tal vez un eco de la propia inteligencia artificial de la nave, alterada por la influencia del abismo.

Luo, the engineer, suggested the voice could be a distress signal from another civilization, or perhaps an echo of the ship’s own artificial intelligence, altered by the influence of the abyss.
