After the shadow’s revelation, the atmosphere aboard changed once more. The crew began to share their fears, secrets, and guilt in small nighttime circles, telling stories they would have otherwise kept forever. Ak confessed his fear of failing as a leader; Kumi spoke of her loneliness, even when surrounded by friends; Luo admitted to having sabotaged some systems out of fear of a mutiny; and Daira admitted she had considered surrendering to oblivion. Rather than rejection, every confession was met with empathy and understanding.

At the end of that week, the Yggdrasil approached the orbit of a new planet. Its sensors detected breathable atmosphere and simple life forms. For the first time since the beginning of the lockdown, the crew felt that the darkness was behind them. They descended in small groups, and upon setting foot on the ground, Ak looked at Kumi, both smiling through tears. They knew that although the abysses of the universe were infinite, so was the human capacity to light candles in the dark.
