Durante el almuerzo, el aula se convierte en un mosaico de voces y olores. Najimi me invita a comer junto a la ventana, y no pasa mucho tiempo antes de que Komehyo, trayendo su bandeja rebosante, arrastre una silla y se siente con nosotros. Kumi duda un instante, mirando su pequeño bento ordenado, pero Najimi le sonríe y le hace un gesto para que se una.

昼休みになると、教室はお弁当やおしゃべりの声で賑やかになる。ナジミが「一緒に食べよう」と窓際に誘ってくれて、コメヒョも大きなランチトレイを手に、勢いよく椅子を持って僕たちの輪に入ってきた。クミは最初、きれいに詰められたお弁当を見つめて少しためらうが、ナジミがやさしく手招きしてくれる。

At lunchtime, the classroom turns into a mosaic of voices and smells. Najimi invites me to eat by the window, and before long, Komehyo, carrying his overflowing lunch tray, drags a chair over and joins us. Kumi hesitates for a moment, looking at her neatly arranged bento, but Najimi smiles and gestures for her to join in.

Nos sentamos juntos, compartiendo historias de la escuela y pequeñas bromas. Komehyo, fiel a su costumbre, hace comentarios absurdos sobre la comida (“¿Sabías que los tomates fueron usados por magos en la antigüedad?”), consiguiendo que todos rían, incluso Kumi, que deja escapar una risa tímida.

Entre bocado y bocado, Najimi le pregunta a Kumi por su ciudad natal. Kumi responde con frases cortas pero sinceras, describiendo un pueblo pequeño, rodeado de montañas, donde las noches son tan silenciosas que se pueden oír los grillos hasta muy tarde. Su voz es suave y, por primera vez, se percibe cierta nostalgia en sus palabras.

Kumi answers in short but sincere sentences, describing a small town surrounded by mountains, where the nights are so quiet you can hear the crickets late into the night. Her voice is soft, and for the first time, there’s a hint of nostalgia in her words.

De repente, siento que la distancia entre nosotros y Kumi se reduce un poco. La conversación sigue con naturalidad; Najimi le cuenta sobre el festival cultural, Komehyo promete que le enseñará todos los secretos de la escuela (aunque nadie le cree). En ese instante, me doy cuenta de que el primer paso para ser amigos es mucho más simple de lo que parece: basta con sentarse juntos y compartir una comida.
