Un miércoles por la tarde, la profesora Matsuda anuncia: “¡Hoy tendremos un concurso de canto en la clase!” Todos los niños aplauden y algunos se ponen nerviosos. Kumi nunca ha cantado sola delante de tanta gente, pero le gusta la música.

On Wednesday afternoon, Ms. Matsuda announces, “Today we will have a singing contest in class!” All the children clap, and some are nervous. Kumi has never sung alone in front of many people, but she loves music.

Each child can choose a song. Yui sings a song about flowers, and Akari sings a happy song about spring. When it is Kumi’s turn, she feels butterflies in her stomach. She takes a deep breath and starts to sing a song about friendship.

At first, Kumi’s voice is soft and quiet. But her friends smile at her and cheer her on. Little by little, she sings louder and more happily. Soon, everyone is listening quietly and smiling with her.

Cuando termina la canción, todos aplauden fuerte. La profesora Matsuda le da una pegatina de estrella dorada y dice: “¡Muy bien, Kumi! Has cantado con el corazón.” Kumi está muy feliz y piensa que cantar delante de todos no da tanto miedo cuando tienes amigos contigo.

When she finishes the song, everyone claps loudly. Ms. Matsuda gives her a gold star sticker and says, “Very good, Kumi! You sang with your heart.” Kumi feels very happy and thinks that singing in front of everyone is not so scary when you have friends with you.
