2-7: 「～しない」という選択【to不定詞のNegative Form】
これまでのレッスンでは、to不定詞が「～すること」「～するために」といった肯定的な意味で使われるのを見てきましたね。 でも、「～しないこと」や「～しないために」のように、否定的な内容を伝えたい時ももちろんあります。 今回は、そんな時に使うto不定詞の「Negative Form (ネガティヴ フォーム／否定形)」について学びましょう。
to不定詞の否定の形：「not / never」の位置がカギ！
to不定詞を否定形にするのは、実はとってもシンプルです。 基本の形は、to不定詞の直前に not を置くだけです。
not + to + 動詞の原形
「決して～しない」という、より強い否定を表したい場合は、not の代わりに never を使います。
never + to + 動詞の原形
最重要ポイント：not / never は to の前！
よくある間違いが、to の後に not を置いてしまうこと（例: to not do）。これは原則として間違いです。 必ず not (または never) を to の前に置くと、しっかり覚えてくださいね！
否定のブロックが割り込む！
to不定詞の前に、not のブロックが「ドン！」と入るイメージです。
各用法での否定の例
to不定詞の否定形も、名詞的用法、形容詞的用法、副詞的用法のすべてで使えます。たくさんの例文で確認しましょう。
1. 名詞的用法：「～しないこと」
動詞の目的語や、補語、形式主語 `It` の真主語として使われます。
He decided not to go to the party.
彼はパーティーに行かないことを決めました。
It is important not to give up your dreams.
夢をあきらめないことが重要です。
She promised never to be late again.
彼女は二度と遅刻しないと約束しました。
His advice was not to worry too much.
彼のアドバイスは、あまり心配しすぎないことでした。
I tried not to laugh, but it was too funny.
私は笑わないように努めましたが、あまりにも面白すぎました。
The best way is not to think about it.
最善の方法は、それについて考えないことです。
He asked me not to tell anyone the secret.
彼は私にその秘密を誰にも言わないように頼みました。
My goal for this year is not to buy any new clothes.
私の今年の目標は、新しい服を一切買わないことです。
It takes courage not to follow the crowd.
大勢に従わないことには勇気がいります。
They agreed never to discuss that topic again.
彼らは二度とその話題について議論しないことで合意しました。
2. 形容詞的用法：「～しないための」「～すべきでない（名詞）」
名詞を後ろから修飾して、「～しない」という内容を加えます。
He gave me clear instructions not to touch anything.
彼は私に何にも触らないようにとはっきり指示しました。（何にも触れないための指示）
There is no reason not to believe him.
彼を信じない理由はありません。
This is a promise not to be broken.
これは破られるべきではない約束です。（受動態の否定）
He made a decision not to sell the house.
彼はその家を売らないという決定を下しました。

行かない何か理由がありますか？
She gave him a look not to be argued with.
彼女は彼に反論すべきではない（反論できないような）表情を向けた。
He felt an urge not to look back.
彼は振り返るまいという衝動を感じた。
That's an offer to be refused.
それは断られるべき（断るような）申し出だ。
Finding a reason not to complain is difficult.
文句を言わない理由を見つけるのは難しい。
They reached an agreement not to compete directly.
彼らは直接競争しないという合意に達した。
3. 副詞的用法 (目的)：「～しないために」
動作の目的が「～しないこと」である場合に用います。
I hurried not to be late for the train.
私は電車に遅れないために急ぎました。
She spoke quietly in order not to wake the baby.
彼女は赤ちゃんを起こさないために静かに話しました。
He put on his coat so as not to catch a cold.
彼は風邪をひかないためにコートを着ました。
They left early not to get stuck in traffic.
彼らは交通渋滞に巻き込まれないために早く出発した。
Be careful not to spill the milk.
牛乳をこぼさないように気をつけて。
He pretended to be busy so as not to talk to her.
彼は彼女と話さないように忙しいふりをした。
In order not to forget, I wrote it down.
忘れないために、私はそれを書き留めた。
We took a taxi not to walk in the rain.
私たちは雨の中を歩かないためにタクシーに乗った。
You should eat properly not to get sick.
病気にならないために、あなたはきちんと食べるべきだ。
I set an alarm so as not to oversleep.

4. 副詞的用法 (結果)：「～したが、結局～しなかった」
only not to do や only never to do の形で、期待や努力とは裏腹に、結局～しなかった、という残念な結果を表します。
He rushed to the station, only never to catch the last train.
彼は駅へ急いだが、結局終電に間に合わなかった。（決して乗れなかった）
She tried hard, only not to succeed.
彼女は一生懸命努力したが、結局成功しなかった。
They searched everywhere, only not to find the missing key.
彼らはあらゆる場所を探したが、結局なくなった鍵を見つけられなかった。
He woke up early, only to find the event was canceled.
彼は早起きしたが、結局イベントが中止になったことを知っただけだった。
(※ only to do は必ずしも not/never を伴わなくても、残念な結果を表すことがあります)
She studied day and night, only not to pass the entrance exam.
彼女は昼も夜も勉強したが、結局入学試験に合格しなかった。
He practiced the presentation many times, only to forget his lines on stage.
彼は何度もプレゼンの練習をしたが、結局ステージでセリフを忘れてしまった。
They saved money for years, only never to travel abroad.
彼らは何年も貯金したが、結局海外旅行には行けなかった（決して行かなかった）。
He climbed the mountain, only not to see the sunrise because of the clouds.
彼はその山に登ったが、結局雲のせいで日の出を見ることはできなかった。
She ran as fast as she could, only not to win the race.
