1-7: 「何を～すべきか」がわかる【Interrogative + to不定詞】
これまでto不定詞の様々な顔を見てきましたが、今回は疑問詞とセットになる特別な形を紹介します。 「何を買ったらいいか分からない…」「次にどこへ行くべきか教えて！」のように、私たちが日常でよく口にする疑問や迷いを表現するのに、とっても便利な形ですよ！
「疑問詞 + to不定詞」とは？
「疑問詞 + to不定詞」は、その名の通り、what (何), when (いつ), where (どこ), how (どのように), which (どちら), whether (～かどうか) といった疑問詞の後にto不定詞が続く形です。
このカタマリ全体で、「何を～すべきか」「いつ～すべきか」「どのように～するか」といった意味を表し、文の中では名詞と同じ働きをします。 つまり、第1章の1-2で学んだ「名詞的用法」のように、文の主語(S)、目的語(O)、補語(C)になることができるんです。

whether to do (or not) (～すべきかどうか)
※ or not は省略されることもあります。She is considering whether to study abroad or not.
彼女は留学すべきかどうか考えています。（considering の目的語O）
I can't decide whether to buy the blue one or the red one.
青いのを買うべきか赤いのを買うべきか決められません。（decide の目的語O）
The question is whether to continue the project.
問題はそのプロジェクトを続けるべきかどうかです。（be動詞の補語C）
He asked me whether to accept the offer.
彼はその申し出を受け入れるべきかどうか私に尋ねました。（asked の目的語の一部）
Whether to go by train or by car is the main issue.
電車で行くべきか車で行くべきかが主な問題点です。（文の主語S）
ちょっと注意：why to do は使わない？
基本的に、「why to do」という形は使いません。「なぜ～すべきか」と言いたいときは、Why don't you/we ...? や Why should I/we ...? などを使います。
疑問詞 + S + should + V との書き換え
「疑問詞 + to不定詞」のカタマリは、「疑問詞 + 主語 + should + 動詞の原形」という節とほぼ同じ意味を表し、書き換えが可能です。
I don't know what to do. ⇔ I don't know what I should do.
Please tell me how to get to the station. ⇔ Please tell me how I should get to the station.
