1-2: 「線・面」で捉える on の世界
前回は、時間上の「点」を表す at について学びましたね。今回は、at よりも少し時間的な広がりを持つ「特定の日」を表す前置詞、「on」の使い方をマスターしましょう。
on のコアイメージは「接触・特定の日」です！
カレンダーの中のある特定の一日や曜日に「ピタッ」とくっついているような、「線上」や「面上」のイメージを持つと分かりやすいですよ。
on の使い方①：曜日 (Days of the Week)
on は、「～曜日に」と言うときに使います。特定の一日としての曜日を指します。 曜日の最後に s を付けると「毎週～曜日に」という繰り返しの意味になります。
on + 曜日名 (Sunday, Monday, etc.)
on + 曜日名s (Sundays, Mondays, etc.) = every Sunday/Monday...
The shop is closed on Sundays.
その店は毎週日曜日は閉まっています。
We have a meeting on Friday morning.
私たちは金曜日の朝に会議があります。( morning が付いても on を使う)

I visited my grandparents on Tuesday.

on の使い方②：特定の日付 (Specific Dates)
カレンダー上の特定の日付、つまり「～月～日に」と言うときにも on を使います。
on + 月 日 (May 8th)
on + the 日(序数) of 月 (the eighth of May)
My birthday is on July 20th.
私の誕生日は7月20日です。
The event took place on the 1st of April.
そのイベントは4月1日に開催されました。
Independence Day in the U.S. is on July 4th.
アメリカの独立記念日は7月4日です。
We arrived in London on the morning of the 10th.
私たちは10日の朝にロンドンに到着しました。
The final exam is scheduled on December 15th.

誕生日、祝日、記念日など、特定の一日を表す名詞の前にも on を使います。
on + 特定の日 (Christmas Day, my birthday, that day)
We exchange gifts on Christmas Day.
私たちはクリスマスの日にプレゼントを交換します。( ※ at Christmas はクリスマス期間全体を指すことが多い )

on は、カレンダー上の特定の一日（曜日、日付、記念日など）を指し示すときに使われます。 時間という流れの中の、ある一日という「面」や「線」に「接触」しているイメージを持つと、at (点) や、次に出てくる in (期間・範囲) との区別がしやすくなります。
