1-1: 「点」で捉える at の世界
時間の前置詞マスターへの第一歩へようこそ！英語の時間表現で最もよく使われる前置詞は at, on, in の３つです。 今回は、この中でも最もピンポイントな時間を指し示す「at」の使い方をマスターしましょう。
at のコアイメージは「点」です！
時間の流れの中の、ある特定の「一点」を指し示す感覚を掴んでいきましょう。
at の使い方①：時刻 (Time)
at は、時計が示す具体的な「時刻」を表すときに最もよく使われます。まさに時間上の「点」ですね。 noon (正午)、midnight (真夜中)、midday (日中) といった特定の時刻を表す言葉にも at を使います。
at + 時刻 / noon / midnight / midday
The meeting starts at 9:00 AM.
会議は午前9時に始まります。
I usually have lunch at noon.
私はたいてい正午に昼食をとります。
He came back home at midnight.
彼は真夜中に帰宅しました。
Let's meet at half past six (6:30).
6時半に会いましょう。
The train is scheduled to arrive at 3:15 PM.
その電車は午後3時15分に到着する予定です。
時計の針が指す、特定の「時刻」という点。
at の使い方②：特定の短い時間帯 (Specific Short Periods)
一日の中の特定の短い時間帯や、週末、特定の行事の期間（漠然と）を表すときにも at が使われます。
at night / dawn / dusk / sunrise / sunset / the weekend (主に英) / Christmas / Easter
Stars shine brightly at night.
星は夜に明るく輝きます。（※ in the morning/afternoon/evening との対比が重要！）
The birds start singing at dawn.
鳥たちは夜明けに歌い始めます。
We often go for a walk at the weekend. (主にイギリス英語)
私たちは週末によく散歩に行きます。(アメリカ英語では on the weekend が一般的)
Many families get together at Christmas.
多くの家族がクリスマスに集まります。(クリスマス期間全体を指す)
The sky is beautiful at sunset.
日没時の空は美しいです。
at の使い方③：特定の時点や年齢 (Specific Points in Time / Age)
時間軸上の特定の「時点」や、ある年齢の時点を表すときにも at が使えます。
at the moment / present / that time / the beginning (of...) / the end (of...) / the age of ...
She is busy at the moment.
彼女は今、忙しいです。
At that time, I was living in London.
その時、私はロンドンに住んでいました。
Please submit the report at the end of the month.
月末にレポートを提出してください。
He started learning piano at the age of five.
彼は5歳の時にピアノを習い始めました。
What were you doing at this time yesterday?
昨日のこの時間、あなたは何をしていましたか？

このように、at は基本的に、時間的な広がりを持たない、あるいは非常に短い、特定の「点」を指し示すときに使われる前置詞だと覚えておきましょう。 時計の時刻、一日の特定の時点、時間軸上の一点などがその代表例です。
