The whole crime suddenly made perfect sense. Step 1: Mr. Croft needs money. Step 2: He secretly hires his jealous rival, Elara, to paint a perfect copy of "The Crimson Tide." Step 3: He arranges for the fake painting to be "stolen" in a way that looks professional. Step 4: He reports the theft to the police and the insurance company. Step 5: The insurance company pays him a huge amount of money for the "stolen" painting, and he keeps the real one hidden. It was a brilliant, clever plan.

My mind went back to the third person in this story: Ben the fisherman. He was in debt. He was Mr. Croft's friend. He was good with his hands. Maybe he wasn't a professional lock-picker, but he was a fisherman who fixed his own boat and nets. He probably knew how to handle an old, tricky lock on a studio door without smashing it. What if Mr. Croft didn't hire a stranger? What if he asked his friend Ben, who needed money, to do the "break-in" for him? All three of my suspects were involved, working together. I needed to talk to Ben one more time.
