Some neighbors blend quietly into the background. Not Komehyo. If Najimi is the sun of this apartment, then Komehyo is… well, maybe the black hole, or the quantum anomaly. He’s the guy who can make even the most normal hallway feel like the entrance to another dimension.

The first time I met Komehyo, he was sitting cross-legged in front of his door, headphones on, reading a textbook titled “Advanced Paradox Theory.” He didn’t notice me at first. When he finally looked up, he just said, “Do you think time has flavor?” Then went back to his book.

Komehyo is a year older than me, a physics major at the local university, and the proud owner of what must be the world’s largest rubber duck collection. He claims each duck is named after a famous scientist, though I suspect he sometimes just makes up the names.

Komehyo es un año mayor que yo, estudia física en la universidad local y es el orgulloso dueño de lo que probablemente sea la mayor colección de patitos de goma del mundo. Dice que cada pato lleva el nombre de un científico famoso, aunque sospecho que a veces se los inventa.

He has a habit of showing up at the oddest times, usually just when you start to think life is settling down. Like last week, when he barged into Najimi’s kitchen waving a map, announcing, “I’ve detected an anomaly in the building’s Wi-Fi quantum field!” No one was sure what he meant, but it led to us spending the afternoon crawling under furniture, looking for “signal echoes” with his homemade device (which looked suspiciously like a toy walkie-talkie glued to a colander).

Tiene la costumbre de aparecer en los momentos más extraños, justo cuando crees que la vida se está calmando. Como la semana pasada, cuando irrumpió en la cocina de Najimi agitando un mapa y anunciando: “¡He detectado una anomalía en el campo cuántico del Wi-Fi del edificio!” Nadie entendió muy bien, pero acabamos pasando la tarde arrastrándonos bajo los muebles, buscando “ecos de señal” con su aparato casero (que parecía un walkie-talkie de juguete pegado a un colador).

Despite all this, I trust Komehyo more than almost anyone. He’s the one who’ll stay up all night helping you fix a laptop, or lend you his rarest comic if you promise not to spill juice on it. Underneath the weirdness is someone who truly cares. Maybe that’s why even Najimi listens to him when he gets serious—a rare event, but unforgettable when it happens.

A pesar de todo esto, confío en Komehyo más que en casi nadie. Es el que se queda toda la noche ayudándote a arreglar la laptop o te presta su cómic más raro si le prometes no derramar jugo sobre él. Detrás de su rareza, hay alguien que realmente se preocupa. Quizá por eso hasta Najimi le hace caso cuando se pone serio—algo poco común, pero inolvidable cuando ocurre.
