I walked away from Marco's practice area, my heart pounding in my chest. The practice cut on the rope was a terrible, silent confession. I was almost certain he was the one. His motive was passion, his alibi was weak, and his skill with knives was undeniable. It seemed like the case was almost solved. But a good journalist checks all the facts. I still had one more person to talk to: Sofia, the young acrobat who now had the job of her dreams.

A little too confident, perhaps.

I recognized the brand from an article I once wrote about industrial cleaners. It was a powerful solvent, strong enough to dissolve grease and damage plastics. And, I remembered the article said, it could make synthetic ropes, like the ones in a safety net, weak and brittle over time. A knife cut is fast and clean. But a chemically weakened rope would snap under pressure, making it look much more like a tragic accident. The puzzle suddenly had a new, complicated piece.
