English Story (CEFR: B2)
They left Prague that night, traveling under aliases. The Faction would be looking for them, and staying in one place too long was a risk neither Rai nor Mori could afford.
On the train heading south, Rai sat in silence, replaying the image of those eyes in his mind. They were young. Not emotionless. Not trained. Afraid.
“What are you thinking?” Mori asked, watching him from across the compartment.
“He wasn’t just a soldier,” Rai said. “He looked… like someone who didn’t choose to be there.”
Mori nodded. “They’re not recruiting. They’re taking.”
“And erasing memories.”
Mori sighed. “That’s why they’re so obedient. No past. No doubts.”
Rai stared out the window, the darkness outside reflecting his own confusion. “What if I was one of them?”
Mori looked startled. “What?”
“My memories are gone. But I had training. Skills. The tech responds to me like I was born with it.”
Mori didn’t answer right away. Then he leaned back. “If that were true, why would you be trying to stop them?”
Rai shook his head slowly. “Maybe… maybe I was sent back as punishment. Or escaped. Or something worse.”
Just then, the Keyframe blinked. A new signal. Rai tapped it, and a holographic interface flickered to life.
A new Anchor had been activated—and it was unstable. Coordinates pointed to the Italian Alps. A note flashed: *RETRIEVE SUBJECT 07.*
“Subject 07?” Mori asked, leaning closer.
Rai zoomed in on the file. A blurry photo appeared. A girl, around 16, with short hair and a scar under her eye. The file marked her as *Missing—Five Years.*
“She’s like me,” Rai whispered. “Another one they lost.”
“And if the Faction’s after her…”
Rai stood. “Then we get to her first.”

「何を考えてる？」森が向かいの席から尋ねた。
「あいつはただの兵士じゃなかった」ライが言う。「自分の意思でそこにいたとは思えない。」
森はうなずいた。「あいつら、徴兵なんかじゃない。拉致されてるんだ。」
「記憶も消されてる。」
森は深く息をついた。「だからあんなに従順なんだな。過去も、疑念も、何もない。」
ライは窓の外の闇を見つめる。そこには彼自身の混乱が映っていた。「もし、俺もあの中の一人だったら？」
森は驚いたように顔を上げた。「何だって？」
「記憶がない。でも、俺には訓練された動きがある。あの技術も、まるで俺の一部のように反応する。」
森はすぐには返事をしなかった。やがて体をもたれかけながら言った。「もし本当にそうなら、どうしてお前は彼らを止めようとしてるんだ？」
ライは首を横に振る。「罰として過去に送られたのかもしれない。あるいは、逃げた…もしくはもっと悪い理由かも。」
その時、キーフレームが点滅した。新たな信号。ライがタップすると、ホログラムが浮かび上がった。
新しいアンカーが起動していた――しかも不安定だった。座標はイタリアアルプスを指していた。画面にメッセージが点滅する。*“被験体07を回収せよ”*
「被験体07？」森が顔を寄せてきた。
ライはファイルを拡大した。ぼやけた写真。16歳くらいの少女。短髪で、目の下に傷がある。ファイルには「行方不明――5年前」と記されていた。
「彼女も俺と同じだ」ライがささやいた。「彼らが“失った”存在。」
「ファクションが彼女を狙ってるとしたら…」
ライは立ち上がった。「先に彼女に会わなきゃ。」
