English Story (CEFR: B1)
A few days later, the Valley of the Wind was peaceful again. The market was lively, and the villagers were living their normal lives. Kaito had not told anyone about his strange power yet. He thought maybe it was just a one-time thing.
But that afternoon, while Kaito was playing in the village square, the sad voice of a little kitten echoed in his head. "Mama... where are you...?" "I'm scared..."
Kaito looked around, but he couldn't see a kitten anywhere. However, he could clearly hear its sad voice in his heart.
He walked slowly toward the voice, which seemed to be coming from the old warehouse at the corner of the square. The warehouse was a place people rarely entered. It was a little dark and damp.
When he got closer to the warehouse, the kitten's voice sounded even louder and more afraid. "It's dark... I'm scared... Mama..."
Kaito gently opened the warehouse door. Inside, it was dark. There were old tools and wooden boxes piled up. Kaito called out softly, "Meow, meow?"
A weak cry came back from behind the boxes. "Mew..."
Kaito carefully walked between the boxes and found a small, three-colored kitten curled up in a corner. The kitten was shivering, and its big eyes were full of tears.
"It's okay," Kaito said gently and carefully picked up the kitten. The kitten trembled in his arms but then gave a small, relieved cry. "Mama..."
The kitten's sad voice, calling for its mother, echoed in Kaito's head. "I want to see my mama soon..." "I'm lonely..."
Kaito held the kitten and returned to the square. There were still a few villagers there. Holding the kitten, Kaito asked, "Excuse me, do you know who owns this kitten?"
The villagers looked at the kitten in Kaito's arms. "Oh, what a cute kitten," one said. "Where did you find it?" another asked. But no one knew who the owner was.
Kaito was worried. The kitten was still very young and probably couldn't survive on its own. He had to find its mother quickly.
At that moment, Kaito heard the voice of a grown-up cat in his head. It was full of sadness. "Mii-chan... where did you go?" "I can't find you..." "I'm so worried..."
Kaito was surprised. *This must be the kitten's mother,* he thought. The voice seemed to be coming from the west side of the village.
"Everyone, excuse me! I can hear the kitten's mother's voice! I think she is to the west!" Kaito said excitedly to the villagers.
The villagers were surprised by Kaito's words and looked at him strangely. "What? You can hear its voice? What do you mean?"
But Kaito held the kitten tightly and said, "Anyway, I'm going to check!" Then he started running to the west.
While Kaito was heading west, the mother cat's voice became closer and closer. The sad and worried voice made Kaito's heart ache. "Mii-chan! Where are you!?"
Soon, Kaito found a three-colored cat crying desperately in the backyard of a small house. The cat's voice was exactly the same as the one he was hearing in his head.
"Mama!" Kaito gently put the kitten down on the ground.
The kitten immediately ran to the mother cat and cried out sweetly, "Meow! Meow!" The mother cat also cried with joy, "Meow! Mii-chan!" and began to gently lick her kitten.
Seeing the two cats happily reunited warmed Kaito's heart. He was able to help the worried kitten and mother cat find each other. This was a different kind of joy from when he moved the cart. It was a gentle joy.
The villagers who followed him were very surprised by Kaito's strange power. "Did you really hear the cat's voice?" "I can't believe you have such a strange power..."
Kaito felt a little shy and answered, "Yes... somehow, I can hear them."
After this event, the villagers came to know that Kaito had a strange power. And when they were in trouble, they started to ask Kaito for help.
Kaito still doesn't completely understand his power. But he was starting to feel happy that he could use his ability to hear the hearts of people and animals to help those in trouble.
The adventure of Kaito, the little hero of the Valley of the Wind, will continue. He will grow as he answers the many voices he hears. And maybe, the secret of his power will slowly be revealed.

カイトは倉庫の扉をそっと開けました。中は薄暗く、古い道具や木箱などが積み上げられています。カイトは小さな声で「ニャーニャー？」と呼びかけてみました。
すると、積み上げられた木箱の奥から、弱々しい鳴き声が返ってきました。「ミャウ…」
カイトは注意深く木箱の間を進んで行くと、一匹の小さな、三毛猫の子猫が、隅っこで丸くなっているのを見つけました。子猫は小さく震え、大きな瞳には涙が浮かんでいます。
「大丈夫だよ」カイトは優しく声をかけ、そっと子猫を抱き上げました。子猫はカイトの腕の中で小さく震えながら、安心したように少し鳴きました。「ママ…」
カイトの頭の中には、子猫のママを求める声が、切なく響いています。「早くママに会いたい…」「寂しいよ…」
カイトは子猫を抱きしめ、広場に戻りました。広場にはまだ何人かの村人がいます。カイトは子猫を抱えながら、「すみません、この子猫の飼い主さんを知りませんか？」と声をかけました。
村人たちはカイトの抱える子猫を見て、「あら、可愛い子猫ね」「どこで見つけたの？」と話しかけてきますが、誰もこの子猫の飼い主を知りません。
カイトは困ってしまいました。子猫はまだ小さく、一人で生きていくのは難しいでしょう。早くママを見つけてあげなければ。
その時、カイトの頭の中に、今度は悲しみに満ちた、大人の猫の声が聞こえてきました。「ミーちゃん…どこに行ったの？」「探しても見つからない…」「心配だよ…」
カイトはその声にハッとしました。これは、この子猫のママの声に違いない。声は、村の西の方から聞こえてくるようです。
「皆さん、すみません！この子猫のママの声が聞こえるんです！西の方にいるみたいです！」カイトは少し興奮して村人たちに言いました。
村人たちは、カイトの言葉に驚き、不思議そうな顔をしています。「え？声が聞こえるって、どういうことだい？」
しかし、カイトは子猫をしっかりと抱きしめ、「とにかく、行ってみます！」と言うと、西の方へ走り出しました。
西の方へ向かう途中、ママ猫の声はだんだん近づいてきます。悲しみと焦りの混じった声は、カイトの心を締め付けます。「ミーちゃん！どこにいるの！？」
やがて、カイトは小さな家の裏庭で、必死に鳴いている一匹の三毛猫を見つけました。その猫の声は、カイトの頭の中で聞こえてくる声と全く同じです。
「ママ！」カイトは抱いていた子猫をそっと地面に下ろしました。
子猫はすぐにママ猫に向かって駆け寄り、「ミャー！ミャー！」と甘えた声で鳴きました。ママ猫も「ミャーウ！ミーちゃん！」と喜びの声を上げ、子猫を優しく舐め始めました。
二匹の猫が再会を喜び合う様子を見て、カイトの心も温かくなりました。困っていた子猫とママ猫を会わせてあげることができた。それは、カイトにとって、馬車を動かした時とはまた違う、優しい喜びでした。
後からやってきた村人たちは、カイトの不思議な力に驚きを隠せません。「本当に猫の声が聞こえたのかい？」「そんな不思議な力があるなんて…」
カイトは少し照れながら、「はい…なんだか、聞こえるんです」と答えました。
この出来事をきっかけに、村人たちはカイトが不思議な力を持っていることを知るようになりました。そして、困ったことがあれば、カイトに助けを求めるようになるのです。
カイトはまだ自分の力を完全に理解しているわけではありません。しかし、人の心や動物の気持ちが聞こえる力を使って、困っている人を助けることができる。そのことに、カイトは喜びを感じ始めていました。
風の谷の小さな英雄、カイトの冒険は、これからも続いていきます。彼の耳に聞こえてくる様々な声に応えながら、カイトは成長していくのです。そして、彼の持つ力の秘密も、少しずつ明らかになっていくのかもしれません。
