Hana and the Days of Her Life

The next day, Hana wakes up early. She is excited to go to kindergarten. She eats breakfast quickly and puts on her shoes.

"I want to see Yuki!" she says with a big smile.

At kindergarten, Hana looks around. "Where is Yuki?" she wonders. Then she sees her friend near the swings.

"Good morning, Yuki!" Hana says.

"Good morning, Hana!" Yuki says back. They hold hands and run to the sandbox.

"Let’s make a cake," Hana says. They use cups and sand and make a round shape. "This is a birthday cake," says Yuki.

"Whose birthday is it?" Hana asks.

Yuki thinks. "It’s your dog’s birthday!"

"But I don’t have a dog," Hana laughs.

"Then it’s a cat’s birthday," Yuki smiles.

They laugh and make more cakes. Then another girl comes. Her name is Emi. She watches them quietly.

"Do you want to play?" Hana asks.

Emi nods slowly. "Okay."

Now there are three girls in the sandbox. They build a big sand castle. A teacher walks by and says, "Nice job!"

At lunch time, they eat together. Hana shares her apple slices. Yuki shares her small rice balls. Emi gives them each a tiny cookie.

"We are a team!" says Hana.

"Yes, a team of friends," says Yuki.

After lunch, they draw pictures. Hana draws flowers. Yuki draws a cat. Emi draws a rainbow.

When it is time to go home, they wave at each other. "See you tomorrow!" they say.

Hana walks home with her mother. She talks and talks. "I have two friends now! We made cakes and a castle and shared food!"

Her mother smiles. "I’m so happy for you."

Hana feels warm inside. She made a new friend today. She can’t wait for tomorrow.

次の日、ハナは早起きしました。幼稚園に行くのが楽しみで仕方がありません。朝ごはんをさっと食べて、すぐに靴を履きました。

「ユキに会いたいな！」とハナはにっこり笑って言いました。

幼稚園に着くと、ハナはあたりを見回します。「ユキはどこかな？」と探していると、ブランコのそばで友達を見つけました。

「おはよう、ユキ！」とハナが言います。

「おはよう、ハナ！」ユキも笑顔で返しました。二人は手をつないで砂場へ走っていきました。

「ケーキを作ろう！」とハナが言います。カップと砂を使って丸い形を作ります。「これはバースデーケーキだよ」とユキが言いました。

「誰の誕生日なの？」とハナが聞きます。

ユキは少し考えて、「ハナの犬の誕生日！」と言いました。

「でも、私、犬飼ってないよ」ハナは笑いました。

「じゃあ、猫の誕生日！」ユキがにっこりしました。

二人は笑いながら、もっとケーキを作りました。そこに、もう一人の女の子がやってきました。名前はエミです。彼女はそっと様子を見ていました。

「いっしょに遊ぶ？」とハナが声をかけました。

エミはゆっくりうなずいて、「うん」と言いました。

今は三人で砂場にいます。みんなで大きな砂のお城を作りました。先生が通りかかって、「すごいね！」とほめてくれました。

お昼ごはんの時間、三人でいっしょに食べました。ハナはりんごを分けてあげました。ユキは小さなおにぎりをくれました。エミは小さなクッキーをふたりに一つずつくれました。

「私たち、チームだね！」とハナが言いました。

「うん、友だちチーム！」とユキが笑いました。

お昼の後は、お絵描きの時間です。ハナはお花を描きました。ユキは猫を描きました。エミは虹を描きました。

帰る時間になると、三人は手を振り合いました。「また明日ね！」と声をそろえて言いました。

ハナはお母さんと一緒に歩いて帰ります。いっぱい話します。「お友だち、もう一人できたよ！ケーキもお城も作ったし、ごはんも分けたの！」

お母さんはにっこり笑って、「それはうれしいね」と言いました。

ハナの胸の中はぽかぽかでした。今日は、新しいお友だちができた日。明日がもっと楽しみになりました。
