Cultural norms are the shared rules or expectations that guide how people behave in a society. They influence everything from how we greet others to how we eat, dress, or show respect. Because norms vary across cultures, behaviors that seem normal in one place may appear strange or even rude in another.

For example, making eye contact is considered respectful in some Western countries, but in some Asian cultures, it may be seen as impolite or aggressive. Similarly, in some places it’s normal to be direct and speak openly, while in others people value indirect communication and avoiding confrontation.

Understanding cultural norms is important in a globalized world. Misunderstandings can occur when people assume others share the same expectations. Learning about different customs and showing openness to unfamiliar behavior can improve relationships, whether in travel, business, or daily life.

While cultural norms help create order in society, it is also important to recognize when they need to change. As societies evolve, some traditional norms may be questioned or replaced to better support equality, inclusion, and human rights.
