An old fisherman named Santiago is said to have gone 84 days without catching a fish. He refused to give up and went far out to sea. He finally managed to hook a giant marlin. It was too big to pull into his small boat. His decision to fight the fish alone was a brave one. He fought for three days, only to have the marlin eaten by sharks on his way back. He returned with nothing but a skeleton, but he had proved himself to be a true fisherman.
