At last, he found Izanami in the dim shadows. She whispered, “You came too late. I have already eaten the food of Yomi. I cannot return.” But Izanagi would not give up and begged her to come back to the living world.

Furious, Izanami sent the dead to chase him. Izanagi ran while throwing a comb, grapes, and peaches to stop them. At last, he escaped into the sunlight. There, he purified his body and spirit with clean water. This act, called "misogi," became a sacred ritual in Shinto tradition.

During the purification, Izanagi gave birth to many new gods. The most important were the sun goddess Amaterasu from his left eye, the moon god Tsukuyomi from his right eye, and the sea god Susanoo from his nose.
