At dawn, Mira led Kazuki beyond the village gates to the edge of a vast forest shrouded in silver mist. “This is the Everdeep Woods,” she explained. “To complete your first trial, you must find the Heartstone hidden within. But beware—the forest tests both strength and spirit.” Kazuki nodded, heart pounding with a mix of dread and excitement. The trees loomed tall, their trunks veined with glowing blue sap, and the air vibrated with a faint, mysterious melody.

As Kazuki stepped into the forest, the world grew quiet except for the music of wind and distant birds. The path quickly vanished among tangled roots and ferns. He recalled Mira’s advice: “Trust your instincts, but do not ignore your fears.” With every step, the undergrowth seemed to shift, shadows flitting at the edge of vision.

Kazuki spun, heart racing. “Who’s there?” Silence answered, then a faint whisper: “Turn back…” Kazuki’s hands tingled with magical energy, but he forced himself to breathe slowly and remain calm.

A figure materialized—a wolf-like creature, twice the size of a normal animal, with fur that shimmered between midnight blue and shadow. Its eyes, luminous and sad, met Kazuki’s. He remembered the lesson from Mira: “Even enemies have stories.” Kazuki spoke softly. “I’m here for the Heartstone. I mean no harm.”

To his surprise, the creature did not attack. Instead, it circled him warily, then let out a mournful howl. Shadows rippled and, for a moment, Kazuki glimpsed scenes in the air—battlefields, a crumbling village, and the wolf standing beside a young mage. Understanding dawned: this guardian was bound by grief and duty.

The path ahead opened as if by magic, revealing a clearing bathed in gentle light. At its center, atop a pedestal of roots, lay the Heartstone—glowing softly, as if waiting just for him.

As Kazuki took the Heartstone in his hands, he felt warmth and acceptance flooding his senses. The wolf faded into mist, its burden eased at last. Kazuki knew this was only the first of many tests—but with each trial, he was forging his own legend in the world of Althea.
