A Full Day of Phrasal Verbs in Context

Yesterday, I woke up earlier than usual because I wanted to get ahead of my schedule and set aside some extra time to catch up on my reading. I got out of bed, brushed up on my language skills by reviewing a few new words, and put together a simple breakfast. My younger sister tried to sneak out without eating, but I called her back and made her sit down for a quick meal. After we finished up, I packed up my bag, wrote down today’s goals, and looked over my planner to map out my schedule.

As I headed out the door, I nearly forgot about my water bottle, but my mom reminded me of it just in time. On the way to the station, I ran into my best friend and we caught up on each other’s news. The train was crowded, so I had to stand up for most of the ride, but I passed the time by listening to music and looking out for any announcements. When we finally got off at our stop, we set out for school together.

In homeroom, our teacher handed out important notices and told us to fill them out and hand them in by the end of the day. During math, I worked out some complicated problems, but got stuck and had to ask for help. My classmate talked me through a tricky step, and I finally figured out the solution. Later, in English class, we went over last week’s homework and pointed out common mistakes, then moved on to a new topic.

At lunch, my friends and I gathered around a bench outside, handed out homemade snacks, and joked around about silly things that had come up recently. Someone had come down with a cold, so we all looked out for her and offered to help out if she needed it. After lunch, we split up for afternoon classes. I nearly fell behind on a science lab, but a partner stepped in and we worked out the experiment together.

When school let out, I went over to the library to look up some information for a project. I jotted down notes and put together a list of sources to use later. On the way home, I stopped by the store to pick up groceries and then ran into an old neighbor who caught me up on local news. It was getting late, so I hurried home and checked in on my grandmother, who sometimes feels left out. We talked about the past and laughed at funny memories.

In the evening, I helped out in the kitchen, chopped up some vegetables, and fried up the chicken while my mom set out the dishes. After dinner, I cleaned up the table and took out the trash. My sister came over to drop off some books, and we went over her homework together. She had fallen behind in math, so I talked her through a few problems and she finally caught on.

Later, I changed into comfortable clothes and sat down to catch up on my reading. I looked up some new words and wrote down examples in my notebook. When my phone went off with a message, I called up a friend to talk over our weekend plans. We sorted out the details, decided to meet up at the park, and agreed to bring along some snacks.

Before bed, I set up my alarm, laid out my clothes for tomorrow, and wrote down my to-do list. I turned off the lights, lay down in bed, and looked back on the day, realizing how many things I’d managed to deal with and how much I’d grown up over the past year. No matter what comes up tomorrow, I know I can get through it if I keep up my efforts and hold on to my goals.

ホームルームでは先生が大事なプリントを配り、記入して今日中に提出するよう指示した。数学の授業では難しい問題に取り組んだが、行き詰まって友達に助けを求めた。クラスメートが難しい手順を説明してくれたおかげで、ついに解決できた。英語の授業では先週の宿題を見直し、よくある間違いを指摘し合い、新しい単元に進んだ。

昼休みは友達とベンチに集まり、手作りのお菓子を分け合いながら最近起こった面白い話題で盛り上がった。誰かが風邪をひいていたので、皆で気にかけて何かあれば助けると声をかけた。午後の授業は各自バラバラだったが、理科の実験で遅れそうになったとき、パートナーが助けてくれて一緒に実験を終えることができた。

放課後は図書館に寄って調べ物をし、ノートを取って後で使う資料リストをまとめた。帰りにスーパーで買い物をしていたら、昔の近所の人に偶然会い、地元のニュースを教えてもらった。帰ると祖母の様子を見に行き、時々孤独を感じる彼女と昔話や面白い思い出を語り合って笑い合った。

夕方はキッチンで手伝い、野菜を刻み、母が皿を用意する間に鶏肉を炒めた。夕食後はテーブルを片付け、ゴミを出した。妹が本を届けに来て、一緒に宿題を見直した。彼女は数学で遅れ気味だったが、一緒に考えたことで理解が進んだ。

その後は楽な服に着替えて読書の続きをした。新しい単語を調べてノートに例文を書き、携帯にメッセージが届くと友達に電話して週末の予定を相談した。詳細を決め、公園で会うことにし、おやつも持ち寄ることにした。

寝る前にアラームをセットし、明日の服を用意し、やることリストを書いた。明かりを消してベッドに横になり、一日を振り返って、多くのことを乗り越え成長した自分を実感した。明日どんなことが起きても、努力を続けて目標を忘れずにいればきっと乗り越えられると思った。
