鸟羽伏见之战，是我一生最不愿回首的败战。我以为，新选组的剑足以震慑群雄，但面对新政府的洋枪洋炮，我们不过是古旧的残影。枪响那一刻，我明白，这不是我熟悉的战场，而是新时代的序章。

The Battle of Toba-Fushimi—my most bitter defeat. I believed the blades of the Shinsengumi would strike fear into our foes, but against the guns and cannons of the new government, we were nothing but shadows of the past. When the first gunshot rang out, I knew—this was not the battlefield I knew. It was the prologue to a new era.

Kondo Isami was captured at Nagareyama and executed. By the time I arrived, only a wooden grave marker and a mound of yellow earth remained. I knelt before it, wordless, tears falling. He was my brother, my commander, my only true comrade. I had sworn to protect him—but in this age of chaos, even oaths shattered like glass.

私は鳥羽で死なず、近藤とともに殉じることもなかった。残った隊士を率いて北へと向かい、会津、仙台を経て、最終的に函館へと至った。私は過去にしがみついていたのではない。武士という存在が終わりを迎えるその瞬間を、この目で見届けたかったのだ。この時代が我々を葬るというのなら、私は立って死ぬ。跪いて生きることはしない。

I did not die at Toba, nor did I follow Kondo in death. I led the remnants north—through Aizu, Sendai, and finally to Hakodate. I was not clinging to the past. I simply wanted to see, with my own eyes, the final chapter of the samurai. If this age was to bury us, then I would die on my feet—not live on my knees.

No morí en Toba ni me uní a Kondo en la muerte. Guié a los restos del grupo hacia el norte—pasando por Aizu, Sendai y finalmente Hakodate. No era apego al pasado.
