In a small town called Moonlight, there lived a six-year-old boy named Kumicho. It was his first day at elementary school. Kumicho was very excited but also a bit nervous. His mom put a new blue backpack on his back and kissed his forehead. "You’ll make lots of friends, Kumicho!" she said with a smile.

月光という小さな町に、6歳の男の子、クミチョが住んでいた。今日は小学校の初めての日。クミチョはワクワクしていたけど、ちょっとドキドキもした。お母さんは新しい青いリュックを背中にかけ、額にキスしてくれた。「クミチョ、たくさん友達ができるよ！」と笑顔で言った。

Kumicho left home and walked down a street with many trees. The sun was shining, and the birds were singing. On the way, he saw other kids with backpacks. Some were laughing, others were running. Kumicho wanted to talk to them but didn’t know how to start. He looked at his new shoes and kept walking.

クミチョは家を出て、木がたくさんある道を歩いた。太陽がキラキラ輝き、鳥がさえずっていた。道で、リュックを背負った他の子たちを見かけた。笑っている子もいれば、走っている子もいた。クミチョは話しかけたかったけど、どうやって始めればいいか分からなかった。新しい靴を見て、そのまま歩き続けた。

When he got to the school, he saw a big building with shiny windows. There were lots of kids in the courtyard. Some were playing with a ball, others were talking in groups. Kumicho stood still at the entrance, watching everything. A tall teacher with glasses came over. "Hi! Are you Kumicho? Welcome," she said in a kind voice.

学校に着くと、キラキラした窓の大きな建物が見えた。校庭にはたくさんの子がいた。ボールで遊んでいる子や、グループでおしゃべりしている子も。クミチョは入り口でじっと立って、全部を見ていた。メガネをかけた背の高い先生が近づいてきた。「こんにちは！ クミチョくん？ ようこそ」と優しい声で言った。

The teacher took him to a classroom. There were small tables and colorful chairs. Kumicho sat at a table with three other kids. A girl with pigtails looked at him and said, "Hi! I’m Hana. Want to be my friend?" Kumicho smiled and said, "Yes!" His heart felt happy.

先生はクミチョを教室に連れて行った。小さな机とカラフルな椅子があった。クミチョは3人の子と一緒に机に座った。ツインテールの女の子が彼を見て言った。「こんにちは！ 私はハナ。友達になる？」クミチョはニコッと笑って「うん！」と言った。心がポカポカした。

The teacher started the class. She taught them numbers from 1 to 10. Kumicho already knew how to count, but he listened carefully. Then, everyone drew an animal. Kumicho drew a dog with big ears. Hana looked at his drawing and said, "It’s really nice!" Kumicho blushed but was happy.

先生が授業を始めた。1から10までの数を教えてくれた。クミチョはもう数えられたけど、ちゃんと聞いた。その後、みんなで動物の絵を描いた。クミチョは耳の大きな犬を描いた。ハナが絵を見て「すっごくかわいい！」と言った。クミチョは顔が赤くなったけど、うれしかった。

At lunchtime, Kumicho ate his food in the courtyard with Hana and another boy named Taro. Kumicho had rice with chicken and an apple. Taro shared his cookies. They talked about dogs and cats. Kumicho said he wanted a dog. Hana said she had a white cat at home.

お昼の時間、クミチョはハナとタロウという男の子と校庭でご飯を食べた。クミチョは鶏肉の混ぜご飯とリンゴを持っていた。タロウはクッキーを分けてくれた。犬と猫の話をした。クミチョは犬が欲しいと言った。ハナは家に白い猫がいると言った。

After lunch, they played in the courtyard. They ran and laughed a lot. Kumicho tripped and fell, but Hana helped him up. "It’s okay!" she said. Kumicho brushed off his clothes and kept playing. The day was full of laughter.

お昼の後、校庭で遊んだ。走ったり、たくさん笑ったりした。クミチョはつまずいて転んだけど、ハナが助けてくれた。「大丈夫！」と彼女が言った。クミチョは服を払って、また遊び続けた。その日は笑顔でいっぱいだった。

At the end of the day, the teacher gave each child a golden star. Kumicho put his in his backpack carefully. When he left school, his mom was waiting. "How was your day, Kumicho?" she asked. Kumicho smiled and said, "It was a really good day!"

その日の最後、先生はみんなに金色の星をくれた。クミチョはそれをリュックに大事に入れた。学校を出ると、お母さんが待っていた。「クミチョ、今日どうだった？」と聞いた。クミチョはニコニコして言った。「すっごくいい日だったよ！」

On the way home, Kumicho thought about Hana, Taro, and the golden star. School was fun. He wanted to go back tomorrow. The sun was setting, and the sky was pink and orange. Kumicho felt his heart was warm. His first day of school was perfect.

家に帰る道で、クミチョはハナやタロウ、金色の星のことを考えた。学校って楽しい。また明日行きたいと思った。太陽が沈み、空はピンクとオレンジ色だった。クミチョの心はポカポカしていた。初めての学校の日、最高だった。
