The departure came at dawn. The entire village gathered to see off Kazuki, Mira, and a small band of companions—Hale the blacksmith, wise in both metalwork and war; Sera, a healer with gentle eyes; and Lio, a sharp-tongued hunter whose arrows never missed. Seraphine handed Kazuki the Heartstone, now set in a protective amulet, and whispered a blessing. The air was tense with hope and worry.

Thorny brambles snagged at cloaks, and unseen creatures howled from the shadows. Lio scouted ahead, returning with grim news: “Tracks. Something big—and not natural—is following us.”

The battle was fierce. Kazuki summoned a barrier of shimmering light, Sera called upon healing winds, and Mira hurled blasts of icy magic. One shadow-beast lunged, striking Kazuki with claws like iron. Pain shot through him, but the Heartstone pulsed, dulling the wound. As dawn broke, the creatures finally retreated, leaving black stains on the grass and a deeper sense of foreboding in the party’s hearts.

For the first time, he understood the true peril of his quest—and the strength of the friends who stood by his side.
