After the Heian Period, the power of the aristocrats began to weaken. In 1192, a new government was established in Kamakura by Minamoto no Yoritomo. He became the first shogun, or military ruler, of Japan. This marked the beginning of the Kamakura Period and the rule of the samurai class.
